Children with ADHD can benefit from physical activity to help channel their energy. There has been a lot of attention paid to the disorder and the kinds of therapeutic outlets that can be used to dissipate anxiety while providing enjoyment and just plain fun.

These children often face so many misunderstandings and setbacks due to lack of knowledge of their condition or lack of caring about it. Getting them involved in something they like is a refreshing change and a healthy path to personal development.

Camping and outdoor

There is nothing more refreshing or healthier than a simple walk around the block or a walk in the woods. The beauty of trees, gardens, and landscapes can have both a calming and exhilarating effect on children 鈥 and on adults, too.

Children who love walking and running can look into school track and field sports. They can run competitively or on their own as a healthy outlet just for exercise. Cross-country running is an option for those who enjoy changing venues and running in different woodlands and landscapes.

Taking children on hiking trails can be a great adventure. Riding a bike along miles of biking trails can open new doors of exploration along the way.

Horses are magnificent animals who offer their own brand of therapy. Horseback riding can add a new dimension to the ADHD child鈥檚 need for companionship.

Horses are capable of relating to the behaviors and attitudes of the people that handle them and can be used to help children with ADHD with behavior modification. One technique used for this purpose is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP).

Campgrounds provide another environment where ADHD children can explore different skills and interests. Rivers and lakes provide opportunities for canoeing and , as well as fishing.

Swimming and water exercise are often recommended for any children looking to improve their physical condition 鈥 or to just enjoy themselves and have fun in the sun. Swimming Olympian Michael Phelps has often said that swimming helped him manage his ADHD by improving his focus and discipline.

Sports and gymnastics

There are many sports that can help children with ADHD, from individual sports to team sports. Some of these sports help a child develop physically and emotionally, help them learn to be competitive, experience and overcome setbacks, learn to communicate with others, do some strategic thinking, and basically enjoy using their own particular strengths and skills.

like golf, archery, tennis, and can build self-confidence without the pressures of having teammates who depend on you.

Archery, although involving potentially dangerous equipment, can have a positive effect in a supervised environment, when children are taught to improve their focus and attention 鈥 addressing some of the typical issues facing children with ADHD.

Tennis allows children to take out some of their frustrations by hitting a tennis ball as hard as they can as they develop skills in back and forth play.

can be very helpful for ADHD children, allowing them to run in an open field and be part of a team, without undue pressures. They benefit from constant movement and action and learn some of the strategies of team play.

ADHD children who may be learning-challenged can be allowed to play with younger-aged children who might be at a more compatible level of maturity at that particular time of development.

Gymnastics uses equipment similar to that used in occupational therapy and can help ADHD children with sensory awareness, balance, and muscle development.

Games

Table games and video games have been delighting children of all ages since games were invented long ago. Some of these games have been recognized as particularly enjoyable and helpful for ADHD children.

Classic table games include Chess, Checkers, Monopoly and Clue. These games require planning, attention, and working memory 鈥 all of which can help ADHD children.

Video games can help with problem-solving, sustained attention, goal orientation, and response inhibition. Some of the more well-known games include SimCity, Legend of Zelda, Command & Conquer, and Minecraft

There are games especially helpful to , such as Zingo, Memory, Sequence, and Super Why.

Games better suited to teenagers include Apples to Apples, Scattergories, 听and Moods.

Indoor activities

In addition to table games and video games, there are other indoor activities that can add enjoyment for ADHD children, many of them involving low-key personal interaction.

A good old-fashioned scavenger hunt can liven up an otherwise boring evening. A game of Charades among family members can be fun and allows the ADHD child to move around and be expressive.

The game of Twister is another activity that allows movement as is Dance Party. Of course real dancing can have a more therapeutic effect and allow more use of nervous energy.

A little imagination can go a long way in planning indoor activities for your children. 听You can have a little fun with 鈥減lay fights鈥 using pillows, or paper balls that can simulate 鈥渟nowballs鈥 or use rolled-up socks in the same way.

Hobbies

If your ADHD child shows interest in some hobby, you should encourage further interest in it and provide whatever materials and space might be needed.

Hobbies come in all forms and sizes, from collections like rock, gem or stamps to writing music or or performing drama. Hobbies can be enjoyed at home or in some or outside group. Your child may show interest in dinosaurs, Civil War battles, or making .

One of your children may be a budding engineer or mathematician and can enjoy puzzles or assembling Lego structures. Or your children may be interested in knitting or . Anything that stimulates interaction can contribute to developmental gains for your child.

is a great hobby for your child. It exercises both sides of the brain. It helps your child do multitasking. Music can be enjoyed just by listening or as a member of a choir or band or even an orchestra. The advantage of working with others helps with learning social skills as well as music skills.

Although your child may be challenged with ADHD, there are many ways you can help him or her grow and develop at the individual pace and manner needed.

Getting your children involved with activities is healthy. Choosing the ones best fitted for them might take some thinking on your part. But just go by what your children show interest in, what they talk about. That鈥檚 your clue to jump in and fuel that curiosity with some imagination of your own.

Being the parent of a is an amazing opportunity to enjoy watching as your child develops their unique personality. However, your role as a parent also comes with the tremendous responsibility of providing your child with the support and stimulation they need to fully develop their talents. After your child has been identified as gifted, it is natural to be apprehensive about your ability to give them what they need to mature into well-rounded adults. Fortunately, you can relax and just enjoy parenting your talented child by using these strategies to provide support.

Remember Their Age
Gifted children are often met with high expectations for their behavior by adults who mistake their academic intelligence for emotional maturity. As a parent, it is important to remember that your child is still a child, and they may react to stressful events in a way that is perfectly normal for their age. At times, you may have to step in and explain to others that your child may perform on a higher level academically, but they still need assistance learning to cope with new situations and challenging emotions.

Avoid Stifling听Questions
Asking constant questions about topics well beyond their years is a hallmark trait of a gifted learner. Sometimes, gifted children ask questions about controversial subjects that adults find inappropriate for their age. They may also ask higher-level questions that adults are unsure of how to answer. While it may be tempting to avoid answering these questions, it is important to avoid discouraging intellectual exploration. Instead, you may ask your child to talk about it during a more appropriate time, provide a simple answer that satisfies, or direct them toward a resource that can provide the right answers.

Encourage Service-Learning
Young children who are gifted learners tend to feel strongly about world events, and it is not uncommon for them to feel stressed regarding things outside of their control such as world hunger and pollution. Encouraging them to volunteer in a project can provide them with a sense of control that eases their anxiety. These projects also provide a social opportunity that can help gifted learners improve their ability to interact with their peers.

Provide Real World Stimulation
If your little gifted learner tends to always have their nose in a book, provide them with opportunities to experience real life situations that support their interests. Visit a museum, an art show or a community festival that pertains to their latest research so they can really dive into their interests. After school classes and summer camps also provide an opportunity for your child to apply their knowledge in a real time setting.

Respect Your Child鈥檚 Self-Understanding
As you have likely learned by now, gifted learners have a unique perspective on life that includes a strong understanding of their personal needs. In fact, your child likely already knows how they learn best, and they may request alternative forms of education such as distance learning or individualized classes. While these learning concepts may be foreign to you, it is important to take your child鈥檚 needs into consideration. Be willing to research and explore the types of educational opportunities from which you can choose to fully support your child鈥檚 learning style.

Stepping into the role of parenting a gifted learner is an honor that also comes with the weight of responsibility. While you do want to make sure your child enters adulthood well-adjusted, it is important to avoid over-managing their life. By following these simple strategies, you will be able to give them the room they need to grow while offering support for their development.

You may think that your son or daughter is really smart, but how do you know if they are truly gifted? Sometimes it can be hard to tell unless you know what signs to look for. The notion of giftedness has changed to include more than just academic achievement. It includes creativity, leadership and sports aptitude.

Won’t My Child’s School Tell Me If My Son or Daughter Is Gifted?

Many parents trust that their child鈥檚 school will be able to identify if their child is gifted. Parents should not be dependent upon school when it comes to recognizing giftedness. Most teachers are not trained to recognize gifted children. In addition, many schools do not begin identifying gifted students until 3rd grade or later. Therefore, parents of exceptionally bright children may want to consider private testing or an alternative placement for their gifted child.

Why Is Identifying Gifted Students Important?

The reason that it is so important to identify whether or not your child is gifted is because they need special attention and education to nurture their abilities and allow them to reach their full potential. Children that are intellectually advanced are uniquely vulnerable. Many have a difficult time adjusting to a regular classroom and display behavioral problems, which may lead them to be misdiagnosed with ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder or other mental issues when they actually are gifted. Behavioral issues can mask giftedness, leading the child to not receive the special care that is required to cultivate their talents.

So, how do you know if your child is actually gifted or high ability? There are that gifted children tend to exhibit. Here are some of the most common signs of giftedness.

Strong Determination

Have you heard others say that your child is very stubborn or persistent? Does it seem as though they never give up once they set their mind to something? Gifted children tend to be very strong-willed and determined. They may become very frustrated when they are prevented from doing something that they want to do. This determination means that your child is less likely to follow others and more likely to be a leader.

Very Observant

Gifted children tend to be extremely observant. They often notice things that other children do not notice and pay a lot of attention to details.

Advanced Language Development

Was your son or daughter speaking three to five-word sentences at 2 years old? If so, you may have a gifted child on your hands. Gifted children often talk earlier, use longer and more complex word sentences and have larger vocabularies than non-gifted peers.

Thinks Abstractly

Does your child have insight into moral and ethical issues? Do they ask questions that their siblings never even thought about at their age? Have they grasped advanced mathematical concepts that have not even been taught in school yet? These characteristics are all signs of abstract thinking.

Loves to Read

Gifted children tend to be early, voracious readers. They often teach themselves to read as pre-schoolers. They tend to have better reading comprehension and read at advanced levels for their age.

If your child displays any of the above characteristics, it is important to have them evaluated to determine the need for gifted education. Often, an alternative school setting, one that is focused on gifted education is best, as gifted children need an educational setting tailored to their unique needs.

Researcher David Lubinski, a renowned psychologist at Vanderbilt University has been studying gifted adolescents and teens since the 1970鈥檚. He has learned much about this exceptional population. His听听has generated more than 300 research articles and papers. Lubinski and his colleagues conducted a long-running longitudinal study of more than 5,000 gifted 12-year-olds. They followed these individuals throughout their education and lives. Many of them went on to become top professors, CEOs and successful surgeons. The individuals that had these outcomes were encouraged by their teachers and their parents. They received special attention that other gifted students听in this study were not as lucky to receive. The others, who did not receive special attention from their schools and parents, did not fare as well. They did not live up to the potential indicated on their test scores. There has been other research that has supported this finding, as well.

Research suggests that gifted students听benefit significantly from extra investment. Two recent research studies found that, among gifted young people, those who had been given special accommodations, like enrolling in special classes or taking college-level courses in high school, were much more likely to earn doctorates than those that did not receive these special benefits.

Although research indicates that gifted children benefit from additional accommodations, many do not receive any. Most of the state and federal education dollars go towards addressing the problems of students who have learning disabilities or who are falling behind rather than being spent on gifted children education. The No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law in 2002, by president George W. Bush, penalizes schools who do not spend considerable resources and funds on low-performing students. A provision of this law, called Title I, allocates more than $14 billion to schools to develop programs that focus on students that are behind. Programs for gifted students do not receive anywhere near the amount of funding that these other programs get.

Often, gifted children in regular classrooms are medically mislabeled and misunderstood. Many gifted kids become bored and behave in inappropriate ways, especially if their giftedness is not fostered. Many are wrongly diagnosed with behavior disorders.

What are the signs of giftedness in teens? What can you do to help or teen?

Signs of Giftedness in Adolescents and Teenagers

Skilled at Reading

Many gifted teenagers are avid readers. They may like to read a variety of books and may already be reading young adult novels by the time that they are in high school.

Extremely Curious

Your gifted teen may be extremely curious about ideas, objects, events and situations. They may be fascinated with figuring out how things work. Although they might have an intense curiosity and need to learn, this interest may not extend to their school subjects.

Perfectionalistic

Many gifted teens are very perfectionistic. This may lead to anxiety, especially when things do not work out the way that they want.

If you believe that your adolescent or teenager may be gifted, what can you do? The best thing to do is to have your child evaluated to determine if they are gifted. It is also a good idea to consult a mental health professional if your adolescent or teen is showing signs of anxiety or depression as these issues can prevent a gifted child from meeting their full potential.

Most people believe that it’s easy to identify . They’re the ones walking out of awards ceremonies with an assortment of metals around their necks. They go to prestigious schools designed for overachievers with exceptional talent. You hear about them winning awards, read their creative masterpieces in legitimate publications and witness their above-average performances on stage.

It’s true that many gifted kids and teenagers find their way into the limelight even if only in their local communities. What many don’t realize is that there are some highly gifted students who may never receive the accolades that they deserve. These students are the gifted underachievers. While they have qualities associated with gifted students, their academic performance doesn’t reflect their full potential. They may act up in class and receive low grades even though they are incredibly smart. They may even fail tests on material that they know well.

What Causes Underachievement?

It’s easy to assume that a highly gifted student will earn high grades and stand out by nature, but that’s not the case. Many of the most successful gifted students have developed exceptional skills through nurturing, structured home environments and attention from teachers who recognize their abilities. Unfortunately, some gifted children don’t come from the most nurturing home environments and aren’t easily recognized in crowded public schools.

Some students lose track of their homework and remain severely unorganized at school because they’re busy learning about topics of interest outside of school. It takes incredible effort from hands-on parents to keep highly gifted students听on task with their schoolwork, which they may find boring and painfully repetitive. Finally, some gifted underachievers are suffering from undiagnosed learning disorders or have medical problems that receive more attention than their gifted potential.

How to Help听Highly Gifted Students Achieve Their Best

罢丑别听听recommends that parents provide ample opportunities for children to explore their interests and build self-confidence outside of school while listening closely when a child asks questions or gives their opinion. They also note that gifted underachievers may need a change in their current learning environment because every student has unique needs that allow their gifted abilities to shine.

If you know a gifted child who is currently underachieving, you may also consider these suggestions for intervention:

  • If they are bored with schoolwork that is below their true ability, take steps to get them into a gifted educational program that will provide more challenging work. If admission into a gifted school isn’t possible, consider alternatives like skipping grades or placement in advanced study programs within the current school. Home-based advanced studies may help as well.
  • Demonstrate the importance of school performance for the child’s future. Many students simply don’t see school as a valuable pursuit.
  • Create a parent-teacher alliance to monitor the child’s performance, identify destructive patterns and work together on goal setting and achievement. Sometimes all it takes is more active attention from key adult figures.
  • Reward the child for improvements and small achievements rather than reserving praise for big successes.
  • Consider any听听that may encourage the child to under perform on purpose or due to anxiety.

Finally, it helps to discuss the issue with highly gifted students听and listen closely to their answers. Try asking about their favorite subjects and what they like about each teacher’s classroom system. You may pick up on environmental issues that are holding the child back from their full potential.

Every single child is a precious gift, and good parents want to do all that they can to ensure that their children grow up happy, healthy and successful. When parents realize that they have a gifted child on their hands, the first order of action is normally to find gifted and talented schools that can enhance the growth of their child. This is absolutely the right thing to do, but it’s important that you take the necessary time to learn about gifted children education and the school听that you are considering. There are a few important questions that you need to ask before enrolling your child in any new school environment.

1. Is this school right for my child’s needs?

Many gifted and talented schools may say that they offer an education that is geared towards gifted children, but this is not always the case. The school that is right for your gifted child should provide a well-trained faculty that is highly knowledgeable in working with gifted children. Parents should expect听听that encourage academic achievement in a way that also allows for independent discovery, critical thinking and individual creativity. This type of learning allows gifted children to develop well and reach their full potential.

2. Will this school recognize my child’s gifts?

Every child is different, and even the most exceptional children tend to be gifted in totally different ways. It’s important that you choose a gifted and talented school that understands that children can be gifted even if they can’t multiply huge numbers at lightning-fast speeds. The best gifted school will know that your child may be gifted in various areas that include specific academics, creative thinking, leadership and general intellectual ability.

3. Will my child be tested before being accepted to this school?

A professional school for gifted children will require testing before accepting your child. If you’ve already had your child tested through methods recognized by the , then the school will generally be happy to work with those testing results. Those parents who have not yet arranged for testing should be able to depend on the school to assist in the scheduling of appropriate testing that is designed to identify gifted and talented students.

4. Will my child receive a well-rounded education at this school?

Gifted children education听is important, but parents want their gifted child to be well-rounded in every area. Make sure the school that you choose for your child also offers a good physical-education program, time for play for younger children, a meditation and discussion time and plenty of extra-curricular and enrichment activities such as art, music, theater, cooking, gardening and community involvement.

5. What if the best gifted and talented school for my child is too far away from my home?

A great many parents discover that the perfect gifted school for their child is much too far away to be practical, but that doesn’t have to be a problem. The very best gifted and talented schools for children understand this obstacle, and you should expect a distance-learning program to be available. This will generally allow your child to take advantage of every aspect of the gifted and talented programs from the comfort of their own home, and most programs allow a child to start at any time of the year and work at their own pace.

Gifted children education is any educational program that caters to children identified as academically talented. There is no universal definition or list of characteristics that might qualify a child to enter a gifted education program, but most gifted schools require kids to pass one of the following tests to highlight areas in which they may excel beyond other kids of the same age:

  • Stanford Binet
  • Woodcock Johnson
  • CogAT
  • Hemmon-Nelson

These tests, plus many similar examinations, are used to determine a child’s suitability to gifted children education. Assessments for entry typically include in-person interviews or on-site school visits, which allow school administrators to assess a child’s personality and behavior patterns to ensure that they will fit into a school catering to students with advanced abilities.

Accelerated Learning for Brighter Futures

According to the听, most standard education programs fail to challenge gifted students because the teachers lack the training and time to provide guidance at an accelerated level. They have to cater to all of their students, and that includes kids performing under or at their grade level. Gifted children are often overlooked or may even act out due to boredom with repetitious material.

Gifted children education programs often allow students to learn material one time and quickly move on to something new. Children are grouped according to their level and interests, allowing the class to move at an accelerated pace without leaving anyone behind. These students master more material every school year than the average student not attending a gifted school.

The Benefits of Gifted Children Education

听often opens doors that can change the future for exceptionally gifted and talented children. Here are some of the opportunities that may come from attending gifted children education:

  • Early high school graduation
  • Early college admission
  • Dual-credit courses

It’s common for gifted schools to allow more flexibility than most other schools. One student may take a sixth-grade math class and a seventh-grade English class when they’re technically in the fourth grade. Another student may skip a grade or two altogether, allowing them to receive instruction according to their abilities rather than their age.

Talented Educational Programs

Programs designed for children with incredible talent are often grouped in with gifted education programs because they also cater to kids and teenagers with extraordinary abilities. While these students may also excel at academics, a talented program is focused more on developing exceptional skill with music, dance or artistic expression.

Parents sign their kids up to these programs because they will receive professional instruction in their area of talent while receiving a quality education. This allows a talented child to audition for professional opportunities and prepare for a career in the arts while surrounded by other students with the same aspirations. The teachers are also more understanding of what motivates these driven students to succeed, so they are better role models for talented youth.

If you think that your child is gifted and would benefit from 听that challenges them to a much higher degree, start by having them complete at least one of the tests listed at the beginning of this page. Many gifted schools will offer these examinations free of charge for all children submitting applications to join the program.

In Silicon Valley and businesses across the nation, gifted students are transforming into the leaders of the next generation. According to a study at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, gifted students only step out of the shadows after graduation. During school, they are the invisible students in classrooms. Despite efforts to change the situation, modern schools lack the courses, teachers and motivational techniques to drive exceptional students onward.听Instead, gifted schools can provide these children with what public schools cannot.

Gifted Children Are Left Out of the Classroom

In the study, Professor David Lubinski looked at 300 gifted children from the age of 13 until age 38. During this time, he tracked their accomplishments in school and in the workforce. From the 30-year study, Lubinski found that 203 of the children earned a master’s degree and an impressive 142 of the children garnered a doctoral degree. They were more likely to become leaders at Fortune 500 companies, presidential advisers, doctors and noteworthy software engineers.

While the future was bright for these children, researchers found that there were exceptionally difficult roadblocks placed before them along the way. Gifted students were placed in settings that did not allow them to learn as rapidly or copiously as they were able to. Gifted students were often able to master the information in the first day. Once they figured it out, the teachers would move on from the gifted students to focus on the other students who were unable to learn new information. As a result, the gifted students were chronically frustrated by lack of learning opportunities and simplistic coursework.

While the gifted students in the study were still capable of succeeding and doing well in their courses, they were unable to meet their full potential. AP classes, accelerated programs and challenging coursework are all necessary for gifted students to reach their true potential. Without a challenge, students with high IQs will be unable to fulfill their academic potential. The best way to challenge and motivate gifted learners is to send them to gifted schools that specialize in exclusively gifted coursework.

Programs Are Required for Learning Disabilities

Currently, schools are required to have programs in place for students with learning disabilities. Due to legislation like the , the focus has been on getting every student up to grade level. Unfortunately, this means that there are no federally mandated programs for gifted students. More intelligent students are less likely to have academic courses and opportunities that match their needs. Studies show that simply speeding up coursework can be enough to challenge gifted learners, but even this option is unavailable at many schools.

Public education seems incapable of meeting the challenge. When 34 nations from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development were given the PISA exams in 2012, the United States scored 27th for math, 17th for reading and 20th in science. These numbers hide a more insidious problem. Compared to other nations, poor Americans were significantly less likely to achieve the top scores on the PISA exam. Only 9 percent of poor Americans cracked the top two tiers. In Canada, 16 percent of students reached the same level. An additional 40 percent of poor students in Singapore were able to reach the same level.

This study suggests that American public schools are failing students. Unable to attend another school or seek out additional courses, poor students are rapidly falling behind their peers in other nations. Gifted learners must be challenged in their academic program, but the studies show that relatively few students receive the attention, accelerated coursework or motivation that they need. In order to get the support that gifted learners need in order to be successful, a child should be enrolled in a .

Gifted children learn differently than their counterparts. Their academic needs may be unmet by the traditional classroom or the modern learning environment. When you want to give your accelerated learner every educational benefit, you should discover these five advantages of gifted education programs.

Tailored, Individualized Instruction

Teachers in public schools must create lesson plans that accommodate every student in the class. These plans do not take into consideration the different academic needs of students who learn at a faster and more advanced pace than their peers.

When you enroll your student in a , however, he or she receives individualized, tailored instruction that meets your learner’s precise needs and interests. Your student has the opportunity to learn at a faster pace and also absorb knowledge more thoroughly than if he or she attended a traditional school.

Boredom Prevention

Gifted and talented students confined to ordinary, slow-paced learning often become bored. They already know the material being taught and take to daydreaming or misbehaving to compensate for their stifled learning.

Gifted education programs keep accelerated learners challenged and on task by presenting material that is new, complex, and interesting. This material often goes well beyond anything learned even at the highest levels of high school or pre-college instruction. Many gifted and talented students in these programs are tackling work that freshman, sophomore, or even upperclassmen in college learn.

Post-Secondary Success

Gifted and talented students enjoy better opportunities to go on and earn advanced degrees in college. The U.S. Census Bureau notes that only one percent of the population holds doctorate degrees. Likewise, about 11 percent of the population holds master’s or advanced degrees.

When you want your accelerated learner to earn a master’s or a Ph.D., you may set the groundwork by enrolling him or her in a gifted education program. The National Association for Gifted Children reports that 52 percent of gifted students go on to achieve Ph.Ds in college. This statistic shows that gifted and talented education provides the incentive and direction that advanced students need to achieve the highest levels of educational success.

Productivity

Gifted and talented students also enjoy greater success in their desired career fields. Studies show that people who participate in and graduate from gifted programs maintain their interests well after high school and college and likewise contribute to their specialized fields.

With many people in the job market switching careers or losing their jobs entirely, you can give your gifted child the best chance to survive in the competitive job arena by enrolling him or her in advanced learning programs. These programs provide the incentive and direction that students need to retain their interests and productivity throughout their careers.

Safety and Understanding

Finally, gifted education programs provide the safe place that they need to learn and perfect their talents. Advanced learners in regular schools often face scrutiny, bullying, and other social challenges that make it difficult for them to thrive. They must worry about these pressures along with learning their lessons.

When you place your student in gifted and talented programs, you provide a safe, empathetic place for him or her to learn. The instructors and other students in gifted and talented programs tend to be understanding and supportive of each other.

Gifted students face unique learning challenges not experienced by other students. You can provide every opportunity for your accelerated learner to thrive by exploring the advantages of

Every child is unique and brings to the world personality traits that enhance the world around them. This diversity means that gifted children exhibit a wide range of characteristics that parents and teachers can use to recognize when a child needs extra support to reach their full potential. It is important to understand that the process of identifying gifted students is dynamic since there is no single test that can confirm a child鈥檚 talents. For this reason, families and teachers can expect the process of 听to include the following components.

Recognition of Specific Characteristics

Gifted students tend to be independent learners who are driven by their curiosity to learn more about how the world works. They may be hyperactive, or they may be withdrawn and introspective. A gifted child will often ask deeper questions that reflect thinking beyond their age level, and they tend to pick up new information quickly. Gifted children tend to be hypersensitive, and they may express concern about world events such as environmental pollution or politics. When a family member or teacher notices these types of unique traits, they are referred for further assessments that can help determine if the child is gifted.

Testing and Assessments

Many schools still use IQ tests and performance evaluations for identifying gifted students. Although these types of assessments do help to identify students who have a higher capacity for learning, it is important to never rely solely on one of these tests. This is because a child鈥檚 abilities can fluctuate from day to day, and simple things such as the child being hungry or sleepy during testing can affect the results. These tests, however, still hold validity when they are used along with other types of assessments.

Teacher and Parent Observations

Along with formal testing, parents and teachers may be asked to report their observations of a child鈥檚 performance. This may include using a checklist to mark specific personality traits that the child has displayed. It may also involve teachers creating a report of the child鈥檚 academic achievements. Anecdotal notes are another important component of the identification process since they can describe instances when the child displayed signs of giftedness.

Portfolios and Performances

Giftedness can extend beyond academic subjects, and many children display talent beyond their years in the creative arts. For this reason, portfolios containing samples of their work or recordings of their performances may be used for identifying gifted students. This is especially helpful for students who are gifted in the areas of speech, music, art and sports. Special awards and recognition can also be added to the portfolio to highlight a child鈥檚 abilities.

The process of 听can take time, yet it is important to have a comprehensive view of a child鈥檚 abilities. Since a child鈥檚 performance can vary from day to day, it may take a period of weeks to fully assess a child鈥檚 abilities. Yet, parents and teachers play an important role in this process from the beginning to end by identifying the first signs of giftedness and reporting their observations. Once the process is complete, families and schools should be ready to provide the child with a full range of support that can help them learn to manage their unique personality traits while making great strides in development of their abilities.
